Fantastic , epic movie. Top production and great cast. And MEM was really beautiful here.
I just watched it for the 1st time tonight I must say it still holds up to this Day in 2020 and is better than more than half of the movies that come out now!
It's a crying shame this movie got so shafted. One of the best scripted, acted, directed and produced Cameron pictures.
“And if we were gonna go down we were all gonna go down.”-James CameronI love that mindset
Thanks so much for posting. :-)
I've worked as an actor for 15 years, and I would last about 2 days on this set. Kudos to everyone involved. Great movie
Wish they would remaster this movie in 4k blu ray with the long Cameron cut.
100% the first of my FIVE films I LOVE .... the second is E.T. / Steven Spielberg
Old School Movie Making.....Ya Gotta Love it!!!!🏆
One of the most interesting making-of in the cinema industry.
Brilliant Film, both "The Abyss" and "The Making of"
I can like every comment here , guess all of you people are my kindred souls.Amazing movie.
Great movie. Holds up as well as it ever did. But I think after "Strange Days", Cameron ran out of original ideas and resorted to even more stellar special effects to mask his much more cliche storytelling.
Wasn't strange days made by another ex wife. Kathryn Bigelow
This film is one of my all time favorites. This and Shawshank,I never get tired of watching. Btw, Ed Harris’s performance is criminally underrated.
"At no time did Ed Harris fear for his safety..." - James CameronUh-huh...
I love the abyss movie
Thank you so much for posting this magic doc. My heart is overflowing with gratitude
‘45 people pissing in their wetsuits....it was amazing’
Please convert this movie into 3D 4KUDHD
Life's Abyss, and then you die.
is this a good doc?
this movie to this day is one of my favs, i can watch over and over and probably do watch just about every year since it came out.these actors are the best ive ever watched threw all there movies.
53:07 how the hell did that guy just keep on swimming?man, if I saw flatbed just driving around my swimming pool...
Now you wonder why the best movies are from the 80s????
When (not if) this movie gets its Blu-ray /4k /w release, I hope it's the unedited version.... And I hope it's re-released to theatres! I'd love to see this on the big screen again and I'm positive I'm not the only one
That documentary is awesome... I've always loved this movie! I have a question: Does anybody know which music is being played from around 5:30 to 6:40? It's such a beautiful one, I wish I can find which title it is or group played it. Thanks in advance
who else is here because of James Ransone?
Ed Harris seemed high af when being interviewed.
Unbelievable how the made thisNot like this Marvel Shit nowadays all CGI, actors doing shit.Kevin Feige and the Russo can hope to lick James Camerons balls
Excellent and underrated film, yet the Special edition is the one to watch. By the way . . .does anyone know where the background soundtrack for this documentary came from?
I'm James Cameron THFT THFt THFFT
Dr Professor 😂
I feel like this movie is very underrated this movie is awesome
Gale Ann Hurd claims that no movie will ever be as technologically difficult for the filmmakers as The Abyss was.Aaaaand then her ex-husband directs Titanic eight years later ;)
Titanic was a whirlwind of a production but I'm sure the problems making Abyss was much more vast in scope.
there's zero fish in the entire film which takes place completely underwater
That's because they had no $$ left over for sea life after creating the CGI aliens. ;-)
lol never thought of that
*The Abyss trivia,* www.imdb.com/title/tt0096754/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv
We will never get this kind of honesty from an actor talking about a movie today
The Abyss > Avatar
I won't ever understand how this movie didn't get at least an Oscar nomination for Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth, James Cameron (director), cinematography, and best movie. Fox can be proud of these times also. Now you get black panther nominated for best movie. An irreparable joke
Avatar 2 is pioneering motion capture underwater, this will be the next step
James Cameron. My favorite director.
What a fascinating documentary !! Some of my thoughts (in no particular order) Mary-Elizabeth is conspicuous by her absence Michael Biehn really enjoyed himself Ed Harris resembles an older Viggo Mortensen Most of these documentaries often have director / actors / producers complementing each other to the hilt and saying how they were the best they have ever worked with and how wonderful it all was etc etc.......this shows the tempers fraying and doesn't dodge the harsh realities of making the film (including the long periods of boredom) with the demanding drive of Cameron and that some people got very pissed off ! ..and the real danger / near disasters .A technical miracle. Good to see the footage with the rats ....and good that they didn't come to harm (although I expect they must have got stressed and uncomfortable). My tuppence worth for now....
I think she hated filming it that much that she couldn't talk about it
A beautiful documentary about a most imperious movie containing the sexiest aliens.
Director admits to OSHA issues.Oops
The Blu Ray / 4K is coming guys....see Skip_Kimball insta post from March 3 with the picture of the studio remastering it tagging james cameron's official insta !
Excellent doc. I am curious as to why Ed Harris never thought to swim up to the surface when he saw no-one was around with a breather. would've been my first instinct.
He was a long way down and had exhausted his breath, he likely would never have made the surface. Plus he said the diver was supposed to be there with the air, waiting for him. If they had shot up to the surface every single time they got worried the film would never had finished shooting. He did the best he could by keeping as calm as possible.
Fucking hell... Makes you feel guilty when you say "awww I don't wanna get outta bed. ".
I am a professional diver and I assure you that, in spite of some (irrelevant) technically labile aspects, this film is, compared to ALL the cinematographic production involving the underwater dimension, a real MASTERPIECE!It is true that money also smoothes the mountains but, to obtain this filmic result, it was necessary, on the part of the director, the same ability (and INCREDIBILE, ASSERTIVE STUBBORNNESS) that Kubrick had, to ALWAYS USE SUPER EXPERTS EXTERNAL BY THE CINEMA WORLD, TO SOLVE UNSOLVABLE PROBLEMS FOR ANY CLASSIC SCENE EXPERT.
all that work...and the movie kinda sucks. hail Avatar 2!!
@B. Ramquist I watched it on vhs the same night i saw Aliens for the first time, maybe i should give it another try. as for Avatar 2....that was me trying to be funny.
Kinda sucks? I'm guessing you're young, Especially since you're hailing a movie you haven't seen yet.
Living inside a bowling ball?... Lol, how would he know what thats like? Interesting.
I feel like the everything has massive inertia when you're down there, much like the motion of throwing a bowling ball. Heavy.
Fine movie. Extremely difficult to film underwater. Nothing like it.
Ed Harris deserves all the available awards for that effort. Well done Mr Cameron, well done.
He did, didn't he? Whenever Bud was yelling and/or screaming, it really does sound very real, desperation and even frustration, it does not sound phoned in at all. Such as *"CUT THE HOSE! PHINLEEEERRR!!!!",* or even *"FIGHT! RIGHT NOW, DO IT!!"*
As others have said you should only watch this movie if its the extended cut and not the original chopped down one... it is spectacular
The Extended Cut is better, that super-tsunami scene had really helped the overall movie and motives for the NTI aliens. With said ending, _The Abyss_ feels like a companion piece to _The Day the Earth Stood Still_ (the 1951 version).
I would actually love to work on this movie as a crew. Spending so much time under water... This must have been life-changing experience for everybody.
I think most people who Were there thought exactly like you did.And then regretted it.
Even if the production had become nightmarish, I'd be interested in working on this movie too, mainly for the fact that it was being filmed in an unfinished cooling tower filled with 7 1/2 million gallons of water. It'd be like living in a gigantic swimming pool.
What if somebody in the cast( or production staff) had come down with a nasty ear infection? That would've been a nightmare.
Why this movie is not available on blu-ray still is beyond me
I know right
@ULTRAWIDE this is amazing to hear! I've been waiting for news on this topic, for years!!!
James Cameron, is the type of guy who really takes his time and doesn't really rush things
@ULTRAWIDE that's great to hear, I haven't seen this incredible film in over a decade. Plus I'd never realised just how much went into making it. I'd heard tales of near drownings, but that's fairly usual in films involving flooded corridors and underwater shoots, but this is on a whole other level.
Its coming man. Seems a 4K restoration is being worked on.
Fascinating, thank you!
I really-really don't know any better movie than The Abyss, don't ask me how many times i re-watched it.
I couldn't agree more. The abyss is definitely the best movie ever. Cameron is a genius!
Taxi Driver my dude
Wow. Now I see why Cameron has this infamous reputation. The moments with Ed Harris were brutally intense what a guy. Incredible respect but I think Cameron is lucky something horrible didn't happen...
Yea, a similar experience happened when filming _Titanic,_ Cameron became known for his autocratic behavior on set, and had even yelled at one poor crew member; *"GODDAMMIT! THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I DIDN'T WANT!"* At that time, Kate Winslet stated that she would never work with Cameron again unless she had received "a lot of money". Of course as we all know, she is now working with Cameron on _Avatar 2._
[SPOILERS BELOW & LINK TO THE ABYSS TRIVIA] I recommend everyone go to IMDB and read the trivia about this movie. I saw it in the theatres the year it was released (I was 19 at the time) and assumed everything in it was stunt people and the scenes weren't as real as they appeared. No stunt people were used and often when you see them underwater struggling for air it's real. Also, Cameron's brother Mike held his breath for a bit at around 15 feet depth and actually held a live crab in his mouth so that it could be filmed coming out of his mouth. The liquid breathing with the rats was the real deal also.Filming this was so traumatic it caused people to break down and most of them vowed to never work with Cameron again. www.imdb.com/title/tt0096754/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv
@David Kennedy Sometimes I get a bit of fear before I submerge. Then I immediately surface and submerge again and the fear goes away.
@Kaucukovnik666 Yea, that would be gold.
Good stuff! I would love to see Ed Harris punching James Cameron.
@Del I read the link, they were definitely holding back on their real opinions on Cameron haha!!! Hats off to you for being a Scuba diver as I can well imagine that it's an incredible experience, but the thought of doing it scares the crap outta me. The thought of something going wrong would terrify me, plus I'm far from being a strong swimmer.
@David Kennedy I'm a pretty seasoned scuba diver but I doubt I would have had the nads to do half of the stuff they did.
This movie is STILL epic in 2019.Cameron's original vision and the long form move should be the only one you want to see.
I would if there was a damn bluray 🤣
Please and if any James Cameron 2019 this movie needs a a part 2 with Ed Harris and directed only by James Cameron this movie is ahead of its time still better than any super hero movie .
haha ed harris would rather kill himself than even think about the abyss again
Be prepared for a little stress watching this. Bottom line..Cameron just impresses you even more with his excellent mind.
Thank you for posting this in its entirety. Such an epic adventure in what was created and what everyone went through to create it.
