People are still self-invented and self-made, but there's something epic in the Goldwyn story; the improbability of his success, his cycles of ruination and reinvention, the obstacles of anti-Semitism, and his obstinate business model in a field that to this day grinds the artistic impulse down into safe, repetitive "product" like the Marvel comics movies.

I'm introducing a friend to classic films and we watched that last week. Forget about the end. I start bawling early, when Homer meets his parents and girlfriend for the first time with no hands, when he is showing Wilma his bedtime routine and of course the final scene. I first saw this as a kid and it moved me. Now I am a disability support worker and it affects me so much more, mainly the stares from others, which never end, no matter what the disability.

Actor Tony Goldwyn ("Ghost," "The Last Samurai") is a grandson of Samuel Goldyn. I know that the actors/actresses back then were slaves to the studio system, but the studios back then--MGM, RKO, 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers, etc.--made wonderful movies that the public actually wanted to see. Those days are long gone. Good documentary!

What an amazing biography documentary - very well made and a bit of an emotional roller coaster - for me anyway
This lock down malarky has made a lot of us a lot more emotional than we usually are for some strange reason - maybe we have more time to let stuff think in and find inspiration from other peoples life stories

His early life was horrific. I like how the documentary doesn't shy away from his being a difficult person. Yet he was also determined to succeed and definitely self-made, as opposed to the son of billionaires, so that's admirable. He also took chances on good, original stories and new actors, which is a courage lacking in many big studios today.

We were at a archery party in the country at a beekeeper host, and he represented us with a glass hive, one of walls of which made of glass. You could have watched bees in there moving.
-- Bee never moves without a propose; this one for example is not just free dweller, see how it moves and propellers the wings, this is temperature balance regulator. And that one is cleaning a cell of comb for honey, pollen or larva, ..., the keeper was telling us how the things went around while were watching. And so they work, all the time, from the moment they were born, became an apt, got the speciality till the moment of death, the beekeeper continued.
-- Only at night they can sleep, a girl said with a sight of regret for these little relentless perpetuators.
-- Bugs don't sleep! Beekeeper exclaimed. They just get born, grow up, evolve into a specie a-hm: a worker, a builder, a pollen-honey carrier, a soldier; then activate till the very last breath, continued he more calmly and with slight sadness in his voice.

Everything had gone well during the day. For accountability or presentation the caps were spread out on a wool blanket out in the sunlight all day. Russell then went over and picked a cap off the blanket to demonstrate how to assemble an explosive device.
The sun had made the blasting cap volatile and went off in his hands.

Fascinating exposes many of the paradoxes and contradictions of Jewish - Afro American social experiences. I found it ironic that Goldwyn was deeply invested in White Hegemony and worked so hard to uphold the myth of the American Dream in many of his films-----often at the expense of Afro American representation / politics

I love the films Stella Dallas and The Little Foxes...but both films contain some of the most patronizing anti Black stereotypes and discourse. Why Goldwyn produced Porgy and Bess is anyone's's a relic that Afro Americans are still trying to bury and deny in the 2020.

Out of all the producers in Hollywood, Samuel Goldwyn was perhaps the best. The reason why Goldwyn's name was in Metro Goldwyn Mayer was because Marcus Loew owned Metro Pictures and bought Goldwyn Pictures. When Louis B. Mayer created his own studio, he made a deal with Loew. That was how Metro Goldwyn Mayer was created in 1924. Mayer was a powerful executive producer, but Goldwyn produced quality independent films.
